Survey shows educators are feeling stressed out

A survey of nearly 5,000 educators released Oct. 30 by the AFT and the Badass Teachers Association shows that nearly two-thirds of educators usually feel stressed out, twice the level felt by workers in the general population. Most surveyed feel demoralized and disrespected by state and federal officials, especially Education Secretary Betsy DeVos.

Operation Agua will provide safe water to Puerto Ricans

Responding to the water crisis in Puerto Rico, the AFT; Operation Blessing International; the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees; and the Hispanic Federation launched Operation Agua to crowdsource contributions and provide a reliable source of safe drinking water to families across Puerto Rico.

AFT-Oregon Priority Legislation Passes the Oregon Senate

Today, the Oregon Senate passed legislation ensuring that all of Oregon’s public university faculty will have the right to join a union, if they so choose. By adopting House Bill 3170 on a 17 to 13 vote, the Senate joins the Oregon House in approving the bipartisan legislation. After a concurrence vote in the House, the bill will move to the Governor’s desk for her signature.

Oregon’s public university research faculty are one step closer to having a voice in their workplace. Yesterday, the Oregon House of Representatives passed AFT-Oregon's priority bill for the session, House Bill 3170, by a bipartisan vote of 36-23. Now that this bill has passed the House, it will move to the Oregon Senate.
 
This important bill will give public university research faculty the same ability to join a union and collectively bargain that other Oregon university faculty have.
