Higher Education Locals’ battle early-distortion
Print E-mail

The distortion has begun.

Out-of-state special interests and large banks, led by wealthy corporate lobbyists Mark Nelson and Pat McCormick, are already spreading misinformation in an effort to confuse voters about proposed tax fairness Measures 66 and 67.

The corporate-funded “no” campaign sank to an early low this week when an article riddled with factual inaccuracies appeared in the University of Oregon student newspaper, The Emerald.

Luckily, members of Local 3544, (GTFF), mobilized almost instantly.

They flooded the newspaper with letters and calls for a retraction. Member Patrick Hayden penned a brilliant guest commentary titled “Referendum story obscures reality.” The entire piece can be viewed online.

Keith Appleby, the Vice President for Political Education at Local 3544 (GTFF), set the record straight by submitting a letter-to-the-editor. “In fact, a YES vote in January on Measures 66 & 67 prevents the University of Oregon from cutting faculty, cutting GTF positions, and raising tuition,” Appleby wrote.

Meanwhile, across the state at another institution of higher education, Greg Monahan of Local 6200, (AAP), is making sure the YES campaign has a presence at Eastern Oregon University.

Watch Greg Monahan talk about why he is voting YES for Tax Fairness in January.

Sign the pledge to vote YES for Tax Fairness and protect Oregon’s schools, healthcare and public safety.
