Political Action

AFT-Oregon and the Oregon Education Association filed a civil lawsuit in Multnomah County against Bill Sizemore, Loren Parks and his organizations for racketeering, Thursday, October 29, 2009. The claim is that Sizemore and Parks have conspired to set up a sham charitable organization to cover up their political activities, in many ways similar to the activities that a 2002 Multnomah County jury found to be racketeering.

The distortion has begun. The corporate-funded “No on Measures 66 & 67” campaign sank to an early low this week when an article riddled with factual inaccuracies appeared in the University of Oregon student newspaper, The Emerald.

Oregon’s 2009 legislature passed a tax fairness measure, which increases the corporate minimum first time since 1931. Now, Now, big corporations, led by tobacco lobbyist Mark Nelson are trying to undo the Legislature’s efforts by forcing these measures to the ballot in January. Help save education funding. Defend Oregon has launched a pledge campaign in support of the Legislature’s tax fairness measure.

Here are the timelines and other information regarding implementation of HB 2557.

Treatment of part-time faculty status as inferior to full-time is an unwelcome practice and message from the first-in-the nation adoption of the Faculty and College Excellence (FACE) Act by the Oregon Legislature. AFT-Oregon leads the country with passage by the Oregon Senate and House FACE, a major AFT program. The new law (HB 2557) arrived from the Legislative session on a 30-0 Senate vote, after a 58-1 House vote.
