Data Specialist - American Federation of Teachers-Oregon

AFT-Oregon is seeking a temporary, part-time Data Specialist who will help create member databases for our locals. The Data Specialist will consult with individual locals to determine their needs, and use their spreadsheets to create robust databases using a commercial provider such as Airtable

The customized databases will help locals with organizing, recruiting, contacting, and assessing members. It will track grievances, event attendance, and other data as determined by the locals. It will be easily updated with future spreadsheets provided by the locals. The different levels of user access to the database will have varied roles and capabilities. 

The Data Specialist will be responsible for creating user training and documentation, as well as notes and information for maintaining and updating the database. The first completed database will be used as a general template for the other locals’ databases. 


  • Experience creating, maintaining and documenting databases
  • Experience in gathering and documenting requirements from diverse groups of stakeholders 
  • Experience creating customizable database templates
  • Experience modifying databases created by others
  • Able to communicate effectively in both verbal and written formats 
  • Active listening and documentation skills
  • In possession of an insured vehicle and valid driver’s license 
  • Experience and familiarity with labor unions and/or education is highly preferred

SALARY AND BENEFITS: This temporary, part-time position with full benefits includes a generous hourly wage (DOE) and benefits package in accord with the United Employees Guild/AFT-Oregon Collective Bargaining Agreement. The benefits package includes fully-paid healthcare benefits, including dental and vision care, for the employee, spouse and dependent children, as well as prorated vacation benefits and sick days. Travel expenses are reimbursed at the standard mileage rate.

WORK REQUIREMENTS: The projected workload is 20 hours per week, but may increase up to 30 as needed. The position is funded through June 2023, but may be extended as needed.

Most hours will be performed during the normal business week, but the schedule is flexible. The work can be performed remotely or in our office. There is one required staff meeting per month. You will also meet with the locals as needed during your work on their databases.
